[He really has no expertise in this matter at all, having very rarely given anyone a gift they liked, on the few very rare occasions that he did. Most of it was outside of nobility and out of pure meanness. He won't count the time he gave Zidane his friends's freedom in exchange for the boy's cooperation - he never had intended to keep that promise anyway.]
[But things have changed with him. Those days were long gone, and he is... trying.]
What do they like? Perhaps you should start with what you know they would appreciate, or with something they can put to good use.
[Well there's a problem he hasn't ever had before. He wouldn't know for sure.]
That could be an issue. Is there a subtle way you can ask after it, to see if they have what you intend to give to them? Or would they mind more than one of this gift?
Though I suspect they might not mind more than one, you are correct on that. There would definitely be a limit, but they'd probably be fine with a small number...
Knowing as little as I do about the person and the gift, most of this will be up to your discretion, but it sounds as if you might have a good place to start. If that won't work, perhaps a gift of food or some kind, if you weren't already considering that? I haven't known many to turn down a favorite treat or a rare fruit they like.

Not likely a complete favorite but...at least something they'll like...
